Elouise Gordon Gaines Sterling, 94, of passed away early Saturday morning, July 31, 2021, after a prolonged battle with dementia.
Elouise was born on June 27, 1927, to late Louise and George Gordon. She is the oldest of six siblings which included Her four brothers (deceased): George Gordon, Mose Gordon, Henry Gordon, Freddie Gordon, and her sister, Florence Gordon. The children lost their parents at a very young age and were separated. At the age of seven, Elouise was raised by a woman named Florence Smith. After she left high school, Elouise became an insurance agent. She would walk from house to house and write policies and collect payments from the insured within the Gretna and Westwego area. Her daily travels brought her face to face with her soon to be husband, the Honorable Reverend Noel Gaines Jr. Elouise and Noel were married in June 1946. Their union was blessed with six children: Noel Gaines III, Calvin Gaines (deceased), Florence Gaines, Jo ann Gaines, Jeffrey Kevin Gaines (deceased), and Terry Gaines.
After marriage and creating her family, Elouise went on to become a childcare provider with a specific focus on toddlers for over thirty years. Her compassion for caring for young children was unparalleled. She was awarded the “Child Care Worker” of the year numerous times throughout her tenure.
Elouise is survived by her four children: Noel Gaines III, Florence Wyche (Sidney Wyche) and their two daughters Michal Wyche and Melody White, Joan Monconduit and her son Ben K. Gaines, and Terry Gaines, her grandchildren: Carol Leann Gaines, Christina Gaines, Jeline Gaines, Angel Gaines, Noel Gaines IV, Jessica Gaines, and her great granddaughter: Harmony Ginger White.
She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Gretna United Methodist Church, 1309 Whitney Avenue, Gretna, LA on Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 10am to 11am followed by a Celebration of Life service. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park.
