Doris Harvey Hallenus

November 19, 1921 — August 30, 2022

Doris “Dottie” Harvey Hallenus peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August, 30, 2022 at the age of 100. She was born on November 19, 1921 in Algiers, Louisiana to the late William F. Harvey, Sr. and the late Callie Johnson Harvey. Dottie was the beloved wife of the late Richard M. Hallenus for 77 years and the treasured mother of Linda A. Fettes of Middletown, VA (the late Thomas), and Judy H. Salathe (Stan) of Gretna, LA.
Doris was the sister of the late William F. Harvey, Jr. and the late Ruth H. Hansen. She was the proud and adored “Granny” of Tara Fettes, David Fettes, Drew Fettes (Laurie), Trent Fettes, and Beth Fettes Collins (Michael); Scott M. Salathe (Megan), Douglas Salathe, and Matthew Salathe; along with 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Doris graduated from Behrman High School and earned a B.S. degree from S.L.I. (now University of Louisiana) in Lafayette. She was a varsity cheerleader at both schools. Upon graduation in 1942, Doris worked at NOPSI as a home economist, teaching nutrition to the home front during W.W.II and supporting the troops in many ways; from selling war bonds to bringing cakes to the local USO and singing with the Choraliers to boost morale on the home front.
Marrying her high school sweetheart in 1943, she prayed for his safe return from the war and soon after became a devoted mother and homemaker. As a part of the founding parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, she became an active volunteer for church, school, and community activities. As an active alumna of Tri Sigma Sorority, Doris was recently awarded the “Golden Violet” Recognition for her years of leadership in the New Orleans Area.
Mom was a talented hostess, cook, seamstress, and gardener; but she will be most remembered for her quiet faith and dedication to her family and friends. Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 3131 Eton St., in New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 9:30AM. Interment will follow immediately at Westlawn Memorial Park, 1225 Whitney Ave., in Gretna.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who cared for Doris with love and compassion, especially Dr. Jay St. John and Hospice Specialists of Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please consider masses or donations to St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Doris’ honor. Please visit WWW.MOTHEFUNERALS.COM to view and sign the online guestbook.
