Case Joseph Sampey Jr.

December 9, 1946 — July 2, 2022

Case Joseph Sampey, Jr. of Gretna, Louisiana passed away on July 2, 2022 at the age of 75. He was born at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, December 9, 1946 to the late Case Sampey, Sr. and the late Madeline King Sampey. Brother to the late Judy Cannon. He was the beloved husband of Constance Stumpf Sampey for 53 years and the father of two daughters, Alysia Becnel and Heather O’Halloran. He was “Poppa” to his 5 grandkids, Ella Pooley, Cole Pooley, Luke O’Halloran, Emily Gatlin, and Stella Becnel.

Casey graduated from West Jefferson High School and attended Southeastern and Tulane. He served in the US Army from November 1966 til October 1968. During his stint in the Army he was called to fight in the Vietnam War. He was an artillery gunner from 1967-1968. During this overseas tour of duty, he was exposed to the exfoliant “Agent Orange” from which he received a permanent disability from the US Government. This exposure caused him many health issues later in life. I want to express my extreme gratitude to all the healthcare workers, doctors, nurses and support staff for their compassionate care of my husband. He truly had the best.

Most of his career he was a retail manager which began at WT Grant Co. and then later at D.H. Holmes and Stumpf’s Drugs. Later he became a Commander of Gretna Police Department Reserve Mounted Division. He was so proud of riding in the Gretna Mounted Division because Mardi Gras was favorite holiday. If he wasn’t on his horse, Doc, riding in the parade, he was on the ground scrambling with the crowd for beads.

Casey was an avid fisherman. He had the best lifelong friends and fishing buddies that shared his passion. According to him, it was always a “great day” for fishing. If he didn’t happen to catch a fish that day, his standard line was, “We caught 17.”

Poppa will be sadly missed. My youngest grandson asked if there was water in heaven. His concern being that his Poppa wouldn’t be able to fish. I assured him there was and that I hope he was catching more than 17.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Monday, July 18, 2022 at Mothe Funeral Homes, 2100 WESTBANK EXPRESSWAY, in Harvey, LA 70058. Visitation is from 10AM to 11AM followed by a service at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s foundation.
