Brian Rodney Bubrig

Brian Rodney Bubrig was taken by his Lord and Savior on February 10, 2019 into one of the many mansions Jesus had prepared for him in His Father’s house (Jn. 14:2-3). Brian was born on January 23, 1936 to Ruth O’Brien and William “Bill” Bubrig who predeceased him, as did his sister, Billy Lynn Jones (Derwood) and his son, Brian Douglas Bubrig. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of thirty years, Betty Morel Bubrig, son Michael Dwain Bubrig, daughter Celeste B. Cappiello and stepdaughter Heather N. LeBlanc, M.D. Additionally, he is survived by the mother of his children, Jacqueline Cain (John), as well as grandchildren Kayla B. Hingle (Paul), Michael Bubrig, Blake Cappiello (Brittney), and Lindsay Cappiello Stein (Adam) and great grandchildren Lorelai Hingle, Cooper Cappiello, Ellie Stein and Emerson Stein. Other survivors include his brother Darryl W. Bubrig, Sr. (Reba), sister-in-law Sandra Morel (Wayne Hingle) and many nieces and nephews. A native and lifelong resident of Plaquemines Parish, Brian was born in Boothville, La. where he attended grade school and graduated from Buras High School in 1954. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Following graduation in 1958 he began working as a Deputy Assessor under legendary Tax Assessors Dewey Cognevich and H. B. “Barney” Schoenberger. In 1969, his apprenticeship complete, he acceded to the office of Plaquemines Parish Tax Assessor where he served with impeccable distinction until 1981. During his tenure there he was a member and past president of the Louisiana Assessor’s Assn. and a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers. Brian was a longtime resident of Nairn, La. where he enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends at the family camp at Port Eads, working in his citrus orchard and gardening. He especially enjoyed traveling with his family whether on cruises, escorted tours or motoring about in the motor home. Brian invested himself in his community. He was a past cub scout leader; a charter member of the Empire Citizens Organization; a charter member and past president of the Plaquemines South Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris fellow; a member of the Plaquemines Parish Economic Development Board; a member of the Crescent City Connection Task Force; a member of the Plaquemines Parish Home Rule Charter Commission; a member of the Plaquemines Parish Fair and Orange Festival by which he was honored in 1981 as Orange King. Brian was an active parishioner of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Port Sulphur, La. where he served as a member of the church council. More significantly, though, he was instrumental in the church’s restoration and recovery following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. In recognition of his devotion to the Church by contributing his time and talents as a lay person, he received the Order of St. Louis Medal from the Archdiocese of New Orleans. For forty-seven years Brian assisted residents of lower Plaquemines as a State Farm Insurance agent. He also served as President of Nairn Enterprises, Inc. and Brian Bubrig Coastal, Inc. and was a member of the Plaquemines Association of Business and Industry. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi River Bank for thirty years for which he was serving as Secretary at the time of his passing. Family and friends are invited to attend the Visitation at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 28698 Highway 23, Port Sulphur, La. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. with Fr.
