Walter E. "Tommy" Bond Jr.

September 12, 1937 — August 6, 2017

Walter E. “Tommy” Bond, Jr. passed away on August 6, 2017 at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Elder Bond, Sr. and Lois Wise Bond and sister Marlene Bond. Tommy is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Elaine Bodin Bond, and children T. David Bond (Anita), Troy A. Bond (Christine), Theresa “Tess” Bond Rodriguez (Ricardo) and Walter A. Bond (Bridget). Grandfather of Allie Bond Conner, Andrew Bond, Mollie Bond, Ashley Bond Spivey, Annie Bond, Calvin Bond, Jennifer Bond, Ricardo Rodriguez Jr., Constantine Rodriguez, Ana Rodriguez, Walter Rodriguez, Harrison Bond, Maxwell Bond and Elizabeth Bond. Tommy was born in Jonesboro, LA in 1937. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a double degree (Mechanical Engineering and Business) in 1961. While at Louisiana Tech Tommy was a graduate assistant coach for Louisiana Tech’s men’s basketball team and head coach of the freshman team. He married Elaine in 1960. Upon graduation, Tommy accepted a job with Louisiana Power & Light Co. (LP&L, now Entergy) in West Monroe, LA in 1961. In 1965 he was transferred to LP&L’s Gretna office and moved his family to New Orleans, settling in Algiers where he and Elaine raised their family and resided ever since. Tommy progressed in the ranks of LP&L and was highly respected by both his colleagues and customers. He made his greatest mark with LP&L as manager of its industrial customer base in Louisiana the last several years of his career until he retired in 1999. However, his most lasting impact came through coaching countless youth on the playground fields and gyms in Algiers as a long-time coach of Behrman Playground’s youth football, basketball and baseball teams. Tommy served as an officer of the Behrman Playground Booster’s Club, raising money to help fund the equipment and uniforms for the youth teams. In later life, he was an officer of the West Bank Quarterback Club for many years which hosted speakers from numerous of the City’s well-known sports figures. The major contribution of the West Bank Quarterback Club is its philanthropy in providing scholarships for West Bank area high school athletes along with recognition and acknowledgement of athletic accomplishments and character building for local athletes and coaches. Over the last 30 years, Tommy spent much of his time (with Elaine) enjoying their children and grandchildren, who will all miss him very much.
