Nina Maude Hughes Cleveland, of Belle Chasse, Louisiana passed away peacefully in her home on January 27, 2018. She was 87 years old. Nina was born in Grand Cane, LA, to Fred and Eleanor Eatman Hughes on April 27, 1930. She lived there until attending L.S.U., where she met the love of her life, Charles Cleveland, Jr., a fellow student and WWII veteran. They were married 54 years, until his death in 2004. After starting their family in Algiers, LA, they settled in Belle Chasse, LA. Nina worked as a bookkeeper for more than 60 years. At the age of 71, Nina became co-owner of C&C Accounting in Gretna, LA, successfully serving a large clientele in the New Orleans area until 2017. In her spare time, Nina loved cooking, solving crossword puzzles, sewing, doing crochet and embroidery. She was an avid reader of mystery and romance novels. She was happiest in her kitchen surrounded by family, especially her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Charles Cleveland, Jr., her mother Eleanor Eatman Hughes, her father Fred Hughes, and her grandson Ray Fernandez.
Nina is survived by five children, Cecile Fernandez of Marrero, LA, James Cleveland of Belle Chasse, LA, Donna Dupre’ of Hemphill, TX, Frances Mercado and her husband Rodney Mercado of Luling, LA, John Cleveland of Hemphill, TX, her eight grandchildren, Charles Burlette, Jr., Bonnie James, Windy and Gus Dupre’, Brandon and Jeremy Mercado, Ashlee and Allison Cleveland, and six great grandchildren: Stephanie, Steven, Dylan, Logan, Sophia, and Leo.
Relatives and Friends of the Family, and Clients are invited to attend the Visitation at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expy, Harvey, LA on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 10 AM until Funeral Mass time at 1:30 PM with officiant Fr. Frank Carabello. Burial will be held at Grand Cane Cemetery in Grand Cane, LA on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 2 PM. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to her caregivers from Passages Hospice for their loving care of our mother.
