John S. Jacobsen Jr.

December 11, 1946 — July 3, 2018

John S. Jacobsen Jr., age 71 years, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. Survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Edna Katicich Jacobsen. Daddy to his children, Jean Ann Jacobsen, John “Tiger” Sidney Jacobsen III (Dawn), Julie Jacobsen McDonald (Ramon Sr.) and Donald E. Kern Jr. (Stacie). Paw to Lawrence Toner III (Erin), Blake Toner Sr. (Alyssa), Brooke Jacobsen, John “T.J.” Jacobsen IV, Ramon McDonald Jr. (Ashley), Cody McDonald (Mindy), Donald Kern III and Sydney Kern. Paw Paw to Heidi Toner, Blake Toner Jr., Kirsten McDonald and Hunter McDonald. Brother of JoAnn M. Jacobsen and Fay J. Haddican (Mike). Son of the late John Sidney Jacobsen Sr. and Mary Hertz Jacobsen. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Johnny “Big John”, as known to his family and many friends, was a lifelong resident of Gretna, LA and second generation owner of Jacobsen’s Automotive Services. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was awarded the Order of St. Louis medallion for his dedication and service to his church.

As an avid hunter and fisherman, Johnny proudly taught each grandchild to love and respect the sport. He was a member of the Jefferson Gun Club.

Johnny was a pioneer for his eight-year fight against mesothelioma with the support of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Because of his many trials and adversities, future mesothelioma patients will benefit from his long, hard battle with this disease.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Anne Tsao, Dr. David Rice, Dr. Zhongxing Liao, Dr. Syed Yusuf and the wonderful staff at Heart of Hospice for the loving care and compassion shown to Johnny and his family.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 610 Sixth Street, Gretna, LA on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 9am to 12 Noon. A Funeral Mass will follow.
